Google Homepage API

En el blog oficial de Google anuncian un nuevo servicio llamado 'Google Homepage API'.

Se trata de un conjunto de herramientas para crear, mediante un lenguaje basado en XML, pequeñas aplicaciones propias a insertar dentro de nuestra página de inicio personalizada. De esta manera, podemos crear relojs, personalizar el logotipo, insertar mapas del tiempo, ... Nosotros hemos creado una que tiene este aspecto, basándonos en algunas de las aplicaciones que hay en este directorio oficial.

Google proporciona una guía del programador y documentación de la API para que desarrollar nuestras propias aplicaciones. A través del XML que escribamos, se creará en nuestra página de inicio el código HTML y JavaScript necesario para generar las aplicaciones.

Se espera que esta nueva herramienta de programación se integre en un futuro con la ya existente de 'Google Desktop', y que sea una alternativa a los Yahoo! Widgets' (antes conocidos como 'Konfabulator') y a los 'Microsoft Gadgets'.

EUREKA! I've found it! and to think I actually thought such a blog did not exist. KsiAnonimo, Best web hosting has shot right up to one of my most visited blogs/site online. 29 Ways to Promote Your Website

How can you get more visitors to your website? What can you do to stimulate traffic? Here's a checklist of 29 items you need to consider. Many of these you're probably doing already; others you meant to do and forgot about; still others you've never heard of. Of course, a great deal has been written about this. You'll find links to thousands of articles on site promotion in our Web Marketing Info Center (www.wilsonweb.com/webmarket). While we're not breaking any new ground here, we've tried to summarize some of the most important techniques.
Search Engine Strategies

The most important strategy is to rank high for your preferred words on the main search engines in "organic" or "natural" search (as opposed to paid ads). Search engines send robot "spiders" to index the content on your webpage, so let's begin with steps to prepare your webpages for optimal indexing.

1. Write a Page Title. Write a descriptive title for each page of 5 to 8 words. Remove as many "filler" words from the title, such as "the," "and," etc. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your page is found. Entice surfers to click on the title by making it a bit provocative. Place this at the top of the webpage between the tags, in this format: Web Marketing Checklist -- 29 Ways to Promote Your Website. Plan to use some descriptive keywords along with your business name on your home page. If you specialize in silver bullets and that's what people will be searching for, don't just use your company name "Acme Ammunition, Inc." use "Silver Bullets -- Acme Ammunition, Inc." Words people are most likely to search on put first in the title (called "keyword prominence"). Remember, this title is nearly your entire identity on the search engines. The more people see that interests them in the blue highlighted portion of the search engine, the more likely they are to click on the link.

2. Write a Description META Tag. Many search engines include this description below your hyperlinked title. This sentence should describe the contents of the body text of the webpage, using the main keywords and keyphrases used on this page. If you include keywords that aren't used on the webpage you could hurt yourself. Place those words at the top of the webpage, between the tags, in a META tag in this format:
. Your maximum number of characters should be about 255; just be aware that only the first 60 or so are visible on Google, though more may be indexed.

When I prepare a webpage, I write the description first in a sentence or two, using each of the important keywords and phrases included in the article. Then for the keywords META tag, I strip out the common words, leaving just the meaty words and phrases. The keywords META tag is no longer used for ranking by Google and many other search engines, but it is sometimes used for paid inclusion technologies. It is currently used by Yahoo, so I'm leaving it in. Who knows when more search engines will consider it important again?

3. Include Your Keywords in Header Tags H1, H2, H3. Search engines consider words that appear in the page headline and sub heads to be important to the page, so make sure your desired keywords and phrase appear in one or two header tags.

4. Make Sure Your Keywords Are in the First Paragraph of Your Body Text. Search engines expect that your first paragraph will contain the important keywords for the document. You don't want to stuff keywords here, however. Google expects a keyword density in the entire body text area of maybe 1.5% to 2% for a word that should rank high. Other places you might consider including keywords would be in ALT tags and perhaps COMMENT tags.

5. Make Your Navigation System Search Engine Friendly. Some webmasters use frames, but frames can cause serious problems with search engines. Even if search engines can find your content pages, they'll be missing the key navigation to help visitors get to the rest of your site. JavaScript and Flash navigation buttons look great, but search engines can't follow them. Supplement them with regular HTML links at the bottom of the page, ensuring that a chain of hyperlinks exists that can get from the front page to every page in your site. A site map with links to all your pages can help, too. Be aware that some content management systems and e-commerce catalogs produce dynamic, made-on-the-fly webpages. You can recognize these with question marks in their URLs followed by numbers. Overworked search engines sometimes stop at the question mark of long, complex URLs and refuse to go farther. If you find the search engines aren't indexing your interior pages, you might consider URL rewriting, paid inclusion, a site map, and targeted content pages.

6. Develop Several Pages Focused on Particular Keywords. SEO specialists don't recommend using external doorway or gateway pages any more, since nearly duplicate webpages might penalize you. Rather, develop several webpages on your site, each of which is focused on a different keyword or keyphrase. For example, instead of listing all your services on a single webpage, try developing a separate webpage for each. These pages will rank higher for their keywords since they contain targeted rather than general content.

7. Submit Webpage URL to Search Engines. Next, submit your page to the important Web search engines that robotically index the Web. Look for a link on the search engine for "Add Your URL." In the US, the currently most used search engines are: Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL Search, and AskJeeves. Some of these feed search content to the other main search engines and portal sites. For Europe and other areas you'll want to submit to regional search engines. It's a waste of money to pay someone to submit your site to hundreds of search engines. Avoid registering with FFA (Free For All pages) and other link farms. They don't work well, bring you lots of spam e-mails, and could cause you to be penalized by the search engines. We'll talk about submitting to directories under "Linking Strategies" below.

WebPosition Gold 8. Fine-tune with search engine positioning. Now fine-tune your focused content pages, and perhaps your home page, by making minor adjustments to help them rank high. Software such as WebPosition Gold (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/webposition.htm) allows you to check your current ranking and compare your webpages against your top keyword competitors and WebPosition's Page Critic analysis of a search engine's preferred statistics for each part of your webpage. You can do this yourself with WebPosition Gold, but many small businesses outsource search engine positioning because of the considerable time investment it requires. Linking Strategies

Links to your site bring additional traffic that is quite worth the effort. Since Google and other major search engines consider the number of incoming links to your website ("link popularity") as an important factor in ranking, more links will help you rank higher in the search engines, too. All links, however, are not created equal. Links from popular information hubs will help your site rank higher than those from low traffic sites. 9. Submit Your Site to Key Directories. Be sure to list your site in the free Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.com), overseen by human editors. This hierarchical directory provides content feeds to all the major search engines. Plus it provides a link to your site from an information hub that Google deems important.

Yahoo! Directory is another important directory to be listed in, though their search results recently haven't been featuring their own directory as prominently. Real humans will read (and too often, pare down) your 200-character sentence, so be very careful and follow their instructions (http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/). Hint: Use somewhat less than the maximum number of characters allowable, so you don't have wordy text that will tempt the Yahoo! editor to begin chopping. Business sites require a $299 annual recurring fee for Yahoo! Express to have your site considered for inclusion within seven business days (http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/busexpress.html). Other directories to consider might be About.com and Business.com.

10. Submit Your Site to Industry Sites and Specialized Directories. You may find some directories focused on particular industries, such as education or finance. Be sure to register with these. You probably belong to various trade associations that feature member sites. Ask for a link. Even if you have to pay something for a link, it may bring you the kind of targeted traffic from an info hub that you need. Beware of directories that solicit you for "upgraded listings." Unless a directory is widely used in your field, your premium ad won't help -- but the link itself will help boost your "link popularity," and hence your search engine ranking. Marginal directories come and go very quickly, making it hard to keep up. Don't try to be exhaustive here.

11. Request Reciprocal Links. Find complementary websites and request a reciprocal link to your site (especially to your free service, if you offer one). Develop an out-of-the way page where you put links to other sites -- so you don't send people out the back door as fast as you bring them in the front door. Your best results will be from sites that get a similar amount of traffic to your site. High-traffic site webmasters are too busy to answer your requests for a link and don't have anything to gain. Look for smaller sites that may have linking pages.

Check out Ken Evoy's free SiteSell Value Exchange. It (1) registers your site as one that is willing to exchange links with other sites that have a similar theme/topic content and (2) searches for sites with similar topical content (http://sales.sitesell.com/value-exchange/). Two automated link building software programs stand out -- Zeus and Arelis. These search for complementary sites, help you maintain a link directory, and manage reciprocal links. But use these programs to identify the complementary sites, not to send impersonal automated e-mail spam to site owners. When you locate sites, send a personal e-mail to the administrative contact found in the Whois Directory (www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/index.jhtml). If e-mail doesn't get a response, try a phone call.

12. Write Articles for Others to Use in their Newsletters. You can dramatically increase your visibility when you write articles in your area of expertise and distribute them to editors as free content for their e-mail newsletters. Just ask that a link to your website and a one-line description of what you offer be included with the article. This is an effective "viral" approach that can produce hundreds of links to your site over time.

13. Issue News Releases. Find newsworthy events (such as launching your free service), and send news releases to print and Web periodicals in your industry. Dr Wilson's Plain-Spoken Guide to Search Engine OptimizationThe links to your site in online news databases may remain for years and have some clout with link popularity. However, opening or redesigning a website is seldom newsworthy these days. You may want to use a Web news release service such as XpressPress (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/xpresspress.htm) or the free PR Web (www.prweb.com). Placing your website URL in online copies of your press release may increase link popularity some. More info on PR. Traditional Strategies

Just because "old media" strategies aren't on the Internet doesn't mean they aren't effective. A mixed media approach can be very effective.

14. Include Your URL on Stationery, Cards, and Literature. This is a no-brainer that's sometimes overlooked. Make sure that all reprints of cards, stationery, brochures, and literature contain your company's URL. And see that your printer gets the URL syntax correct. In print, I recommend leaving off the http:// part and including only the www.domain.com portion.

15. Promote using traditional media. Don't discontinue print advertising you've found effective. But be sure to include your URL in any display or classified ads you purchase in trade journals, newspapers, yellow pages, etc. View your website as an information adjunct to the ad. Use a two-step approach: (1) capture readers' attention with the ad, (2) then refer them to a URL where they can obtain more information and perhaps place an order. Look carefully at small display or classified ads in the back of narrowly-targeted magazines or trade periodicals. Sometimes these ads are more targeted, more effective, and less expensive than online advertising. Consider other traditional media to drive people to your site, such as direct mail, classifieds, post cards, etc. TV used to promote sites, especially in a local market.

16. Develop a Free Service. It's boring to invite people, "Come to our site and learn about our business." It's quite another to say "Use the free kitchen remodeling calculator available exclusively on our site." Make no mistake, it's expensive in time and energy to develop free resources, such as our Web Marketing Info Center (www.wilsonweb.com/webmarket), but it is very rewarding in increased traffic to your site. Make sure that your free service is closely related to what you are selling so the visitors you attract will be good prospects for your business. Give visitors multiple opportunities and links to cross over to the sales part of your site.
E-Mail Strategies

That is, don't send bulk unsolicited e-mails without permission to people with whom you have no relationship. 17. Install a "Signature" in your E-Mail Program to help potential customers get in touch with you. Most e-mail programs such as AOL, Netscape, and Outlook allow you to designate a "signature" to appear at the end of each message you send. Limit it to 6 to 8 lines: Company name, address, phone number, URL, e-mail address, and a one-phrase description of your unique business offering. Look for examples on e-mail messages sent to you.

18. Publish an E-Mail Newsletter. While it's a big commitment in time, publishing a monthly or bi-monthly e-mail newsletter ("ezine") is one of the very best ways to keep in touch with your prospects, generate trust, develop brand awareness, and build future business. It also helps you collect e-mail addresses from those who visit your site but aren't yet ready to make a purchase. Ask for e-mail address and their first name so you can personalize the newsletter. You can distribute your newsletter using listservers such as Gammadyne Mailer (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/gammadyne.htm), Infacta GroupMail (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/groupmail.htm), Topica Email Publisher (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/topica.htm), or Constant Contact (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/roving.htm). 19. Send Offers to Your Visitors and Customers. Your own list of customers and site visitors who have given you permission to contact them will be your most productive list. Send offers, coupon specials, product updates, etc. Personalizing the subject line and the message may increase the results. 20. Rent targeted e-mail lists. We abhor "spam," bulk untargeted, unsolicited e-mail, and you'll pay a very stiff price in a ruined reputation and cancelled services if you yield to temptation here. But the direct marketing industry has developed targeted e-mail lists you can rent consisting of people who have agreed to receive commercial e-mail messages. These cost $40 to $250 per thousand, 4¢ to 25¢ per name. Do a smaller test first to determine the quality of the list. Your best bet is to find an e-mail list broker to help you with this project -- you'll save money and get experienced help for no additional cost (www.wilsonweb.com/contact/listbroker.htm). Miscellaneous Strategies

21. Promote Your Site in Mailing Lists and News Groups. The Internet offers thousands of very targeted e-mail based discussion lists and Usenet news groups made up of people with very specialized interests. Use Google Groups to find appropriate sources (http://groups.google.com). Don't bother with news groups consisting of pure "spam." Instead, find groups where a dialog is taking place. Don't use aggressive marketing and overtly plug your product or service. Rather, add to the discussion in a helpful way and let the "signature" at the end of your e-mail message do your marketing for you. People will gradually get to know and trust you, visit your site, and do business with you. 22. Announce a Contest. People like getting something free. If you publicize a contest or drawing available on your site, you'll generate more traffic than normal. Make sure your sweepstakes rules are legal in all states and countries you are targeting. Prizes should be designed to attract individuals who fit a demographic profile describing your best customers. 23. Ask Visitors to Bookmark Your Site. It seems so simple, but make sure you ask visitors to bookmark your site (www.wilsonweb.com/wmta/bookmark.htm) We use a graphic on the main entry page to our site. Hey, why don't you bookmark the article you're reading right now? You know you'll want to find it again soon.

24. Exchange Ads with Complementary Businesses. Banner exchange programs don't work well these days. But consider exchanging e-mail newsletter ads with complementary businesses to reach new audiences.

25. Devise Viral Marketing Promotion Techniques. So-called viral marketing uses the communication networks (and preferably the resources) of your site visitors or customers to spread the word about your site exponentially. Word-of-mouth, PR, creating "buzz," and network marketing are offline models. #12 above, "Write Articles for Others to Use in their Newsletters" is a viral approach. The classic example is the free e-mail service, hotmail.com, that includes a tagline about their service at the end of every message sent out, so friends tell friends, who tell friends. Paid Advertising Strategies

None of the approaches described above is "free," since each takes time and energy. But if you want to grow your business more rapidly, there comes a point when you need to pay for increased traffic. Advertising is sold in one of three ways: (1) traditional CPM (cost per thousand views), (2) pay per click (PPC), and (3) pay per action, otherwise known as an affiliate program or lead generation program. Do some small tests first to determine response, and then calculate your return on investment (ROI) before spending large amounts. Here are some methods:

26. Buy a Text Ad in an E-Mail Newsletter. Some of the best buys are small text ads in e-mail newsletters targeted at audiences likely to be interested in your products or services. Many small publishers aren't sophisticated about advertising and offer attractive rates. For example, we offer low-priced 2-Line Ads in Web Marketing Today each week (www.wilsonweb.com/ads/2-line-ad.htm). Banner ads get such a low click-through rate (0.2%) these days that I don't recommend paying much for them. Banner ads typically cost about 50¢ to $1 per thousand page views.

27. Begin an Affiliate Program. Essentially, a retailer's affiliate program pays a commission to other sites whose links to the retailer result in an actual sale. The goal is to build a network of affiliates who have a financial stake in promoting your site. If you're a merchant you, need to (1) determine the commission you are willing to pay (consider it your advertising cost), (2) select a company to set up the technical details of your program, and (3) promote your program to get the right kind of affiliates who will link to your site. Consider affiliate management software such as My Affiliate Program (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/myaffiliateprogram.htm) or Ultimate Affiliate Program (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/groundbreak.htm). 28. Purchase Pay Per Click (PPC) ads on Overture.com (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/overture.htm) and Google AdWords (https://adwords.google.com/select/). The top ads appear as featured links at the top of search engine results for your keywords in many search engines. Your ranking is determined by how much you've bid for a particular search word compared to other businesses. This can be a cost-effective way to get targeted traffic, since you only pay when someone actually clicks on the link. Lower cost PPC systems include FindWhat (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/findwhat.htm) and Kanoodle (www.wilsonweb.com/afd/kanoodle.htm). 29. List Your Products with Shopping Comparison Bots and Auction Sites. Shopping bots compare your products and prices to others. Google's new Froogle (www.froogle.com) is free, so be sure to list your products there. A Froogle listing also helps your product page's ranking on Google. Some work on a PPC basis: mySimon (www.mysimon.com), BizRate (www.bizrate.com), PriceGrabber (www.pricegrabber.com), and Shopping.com (www.shopping.com). Others expect a commission on the sale and sometimes a listing fee, especially sales systems that host the merchant. These include eBay (www.ebay.com), Yahoo! Shopping Auctions (http://auctions.shopping.yahoo.com), Amazon zShops, Marketplace, and Auctions (http://zshops.amazon.com), and Yahoo! Shopping (http://shopping.yahoo.com). You pay to acquire first-time customers, but hopefully you can sell to them a second, third, and fourth time, too.

We certainly haven't exhausted ways to promote your site, but these will get you started. To effectively market your site, you need to spend some time adapting these strategies to your own market and capacity. How to Choose a Web Hosting Service (ISP) for your Business Web Pages

One of the most important decisions you'll make for your business Web site is selecting which Web hosting service will display your Web pages to the Internet. With a good Internet Service Provider (ISP) you don't have many problems; with a poor ISP you have much pain. So how do you go about shopping?

Types of Web Hosting Services

First, let's examine the types of services available.

Dial-Up Access. There are thousands of local dial-up access providers in the country, each of which also provides Web page hosting for businesses. I've learned that ISPs either specialize in dial-up access or Web page hosting, and it's a rare ISP that ends up doing both well. Many dial-up access ISPs don't really understand the needs of small businesses, and aren't quick to improve service. After all, their bread-and-butter is dial-up access, and that's where their focus and investment goes. A few large companies have separate divisions for Web site hosting which help them avoid some of these problems.

Developer's Hosting. A second kind of service is becoming common. Web site developers commonly host the Web pages for the businesses which are their clients, often on a computer in the corner of their office. They often provide good service, since they are customer focused. The downsides may be: (1) price, (2) smaller connection to the Internet backbone, and (3) dependence, which we'll discuss below.

Web-Hosting Only. Increasingly you find companies which specialize in business Web site hosting. They allow no dial-up access (site owners gain access to their Web pages via FTP), which doesn't allow bandwidth (speed of connection to the Internet) to be compromised by access customers frequenting chat rooms. They provide a wide variety of services to their customers. This is where the bargains are to be found. How do you find them? Look at ads in the Web developer magazines at your local newsstand.

Industrial Strength Hosting. If you have a very high traffic site, you'll need to look to the largest national companies which provide mirror sites on both coasts, 24-hour staffing, redundant connections to the Internet backbone, and substantial prices. No bargains here, but you have the expectation of maximum reliability.

Think National

But how do I upload files to an ISP who doesn't have a local access number? you ask. You need local PPP access to the Internet, commonly offered in most parts of the US at $20 per month for unmetered service. This gives you a local e-mail address. It also gives you a connection which allows you to use an FTP program on your desktop computer, enabling you to upload files to an ISP anywhere in the world, so long as you have the correct username and password.

Let's say you sign up with a Web hosting service in Pennsylvania and you live in Texas. No problem. You get on the Web through your local ISP in Texas, and FTP your files to the ISP in Pennsylvania which hosts your Web pages. E-mail sent to your domain hosted in Pennsylvania is automatically forwarded to your local e-mail address in Texas. You set the return address on your desktop e-mail program to your business domain name, and no one will know (unless they bother to read all the e-mail header material) that you have hosting in Pennsylvania with forwarding to Texas.

Now, if your local ISP doesn't offer you the services and prices you need, you can shop anywhere in the country. (Anywhere in the world, actually, though transcontinental Internet connections can sometimes be very slow.) Non-US companies commonly set up Web sites hosted in the US, and have their e-mail forwarded half-way around the world.

What to Look For

Shopping for a Web hosting ISP is difficult at best, but these are some of the things to look for.

Size of Pipeline. The host computer is connected to the Internet backbone typically by T1 and T3 lines. A T1 can carry up to 1.5 mbs (megabits per second), while a T3 can carry 45 mbs. Small ISP hosts sometimes have ISDN connections to the Internet, or "fractional T1" connections (part of a T1). Look for T3 if you can, though a T1 isn't close to its maximum capacity. The expense of installing an adequate pipeline to the Internet is the chief barrier to setting up your own Web server computer in your office; telephone and other charges are pretty stiff, unless they can be shared with other businesses. Another alternative to explore is "co-hosting" your computer at an ISP's location to take advantage of his connection to the Internet.

Number of clients per machine. Ask how many business clients are assigned to each of the ISP's computers. (Don't be surprised to find out that many good ISPs use fast Pentium computers rather than something more exotic.) You may not learn too much by asking this, but you do learn if the ISP has any policy limits at all.

Space. ISPs usually assign you a certain amount of space on their computer. 5 MB is plenty of space for the Web pages and graphics for most business Web sites. I once jammed nearly 800 files and graphics into 5 MB. But ask if mail, log files, and system programs are counted in the 5 MB; these can sometimes take up considerable space. Web hosts which include mail and log files in the count commonly offer 15 MB minimum.

CGI-bin Access. Business accounts need to be able to reference programs in a cgi-bin directory, which includes a cgi program which generates the e-mail message sent out by Web page forms. So long as a good forms-to-email program is available in the host's main cgi-bin, that may be all you need. If you or your Web site developer need to write custom programs, though, you'll need your own cgi-bin directory. But here's the problem. Most Web hosting ISPs allow FTP access to a cgi-bin directory but not Telnet access. This can significantly slow down programming development time. If you don't have Telnet access, for example, you won't be able to compile any programs written in C or C++. You have to rely on the ISP's technical support to do that for you -- when he gets around to it. ISPs say that limiting Telnet access helps them keep out hackers, which is true. But if it is at the cost of getting your Web site working, the cost may be too high. Ask: "Do you allow us Telnet access to a cgi-bin directory?"

Virtual Hosting. These days nearly every ISP offers what is called "virtual hosting" or a "virtual domain." This allows you to have your own domain name such as http://www.yourcompany.com rather than use your ISP's domain name with a subdirectory designating your site, such as http://www.isp.com/yourcompany/. You definitely want virtual hosting. Sometimes an ISP will offer something called a "vanity domain" such as http://yourcompany.isp.com. Don't bother. Pay $100 to register a real domain name, and consider that an investment in marketing your company on the Web.

E-Mail Aliases. Once you have a virtual domain, ask your ISP how many e-mail addresses you are allowed. Many ISPs allow you to set up multiple "aliases" such as sales@yourcompany.com or info@yourcompany.com. Also ask if different aliases can be forwarded to more than one e-mail address. For example, I have a client with partners in Germany as well as offices in California, with e-mail aliases for each of them. For the smaller business, you probably don't need POP (Post Office Protocol) e-mail boxes on your Web hosting site. The POP e-mail box you have with your local access ISP is probably enough. But larger businesses may want to have multiple POP e-mail boxes at the Web hosting ISP. (Ask your MIS staff member. If you don't have an MIS staff member, you probably don't need this.)

Dependence. How free are you to choose another Web hosting ISP if this one doesn't work out? If your Web site developer provides hosting, what kinds of contracts lock you into using those services and for how long? So long as your name is listed as the "Administrative Contact" with InterNIC, you can transfer your domain to another ISP, though your previous ISP can slow down the process unless he cooperates. Make sure your Web site developer isn't listed as the Administrative Contact or it may be more difficult to switch to a new developer if the need arises. You can see who is currently listed by checking your domain at http://rs.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois

Support. How many hours a day are technical support staff available? How quickly do they respond? How much help do they provide? If you need 24-hour technical support -- and larger companies and high-traffic Web sites do -- then expect to pay substantially more. People are much more expensive than machines.

Extra Features for Business

Make sure you inquire about the availability of mailing list management programs such as Majordomo for newsletters, and autoresponders for automatic responses to e-mail messages sent to certain addresses. If you have software demos available for download, you'll want "anonymous FTP" capability. (This differs from FTP access to your Web pages which requires your username and password. Nearly all ISPs make that available.) Also make sure that your Web host ISP provides some sort of statistical data on visitors to your Web pages. Counters are not considered professional, and don't give nearly as much information. If you plan to take credit card information over the Web, you'll need to have SSL Security. If you plan to display databases on your Web site, be very careful to get an ISP whose operating system is compatible with the system you use to maintain the database.

What Should You Expect to Pay?

The best advice is to know the services you really need, and only pay for those. The typical six-page small business Web site with a single response form, for example, can find good virtual hosting with multiple e-mail aliases, cgi-bin access, and a T3 connection to the Internet for $18 to $25 per month. If you need SSL Security, expect to pay $35 to $75 per month. Setup fees are typically $50, though sometimes higher for special features. Prices will be higher in many localities. Large companies and high volume Web sites will pay much higher rates to get the services they need.

But I am paying too much! you cry. Find out what you need and then shop around. When you discover a better deal, see if your current ISP will match it. (Life is more competitive these days when business customers can get Web hosting any place in the country.) And when comparing Web hosting prices with your local ISP's hosting rates, remember that you'll have to pay $20 per month for access anyway, so figure that into the equation.

The most difficult thing to learn is how responsive the Web host ISP is to fixing problems which arise. How slow is the site during peak hours? Does the ISP host a very high volume site which slows everybody else down? This kind of information is difficult to find out except by asking some of the ISP's current customers.

Like much shopping, referral is often the safest. And referrals to the best ISPs is what you pay your Web site developer to give you. Select your Web site developer before you select an ISP. But if you plan to shop on your own, at least you have a list of questions to ask, which can help steer you to the best service/price ratio possible.

Claves para ser indexado en Google

Para ser indexado en Google, realmente no debemos hacer nada. Google es un buscador que entra dentro dentro de la categoría de Robots o Crawlers, es decir, va rastreando toda la red e indexándo automáticamente todos los sitios web que encuentra, empezando por la página index de cada uno de ellos y siguiendo su estructura de enlaces.

Ahora bien, es necesario "agradar" a Google para que indexe nuestra web sin problemas. Para ello lo más recomendable para ser indexados con éxito es:

1- Establece un título en cada uno de los documentos que conforman nuestro sitio web. El título deberá ser corto y definir los contenidos del documento, utilizándo como máximo un par de criterios por los que consideremos que debería ser encontrada esa página en el buscador.

2- Utiliza las metatags. Aunque google las ignora, o eso parece, siempre es mejor tenerlas que no tenerlas. En mi opinión la única que parece útil para google es la "meta name description".

3- Intenta utilizar un código HTML límpio y que se ciña a los estándares. Olvídate de Front Page y páginas maquetadas con Microsoft Word y exportadas a HTML.

4- Sobre el Flash. Al parecer Google ya indexa sitios desarrollados íntegramente en flash, aasta ahora el uso de Flash y la promoción de una página en lo referente parecián dos intereses opuestos. Google era incapaz de extraer información y seguir los enlaces embebidos dentro de un archivo .swf, por lo que tanto el contenido de esta página como los enlaces hacia otras no eran explorados por Googlebot y como consecuencia, ignorados por completo.

Ahora bien, existen muchos interrogantes en cuanto al proceso de indexación que reciben este tipo de archivos (o webs) en relación a los sitios web en HTML, si google los considera igual de "importantes" o no.

Te recomendamos, si tu intención es la de realizar una fuerte promoción sobre tu web o intentar posicionarla, no desarrollarla toda en flash, si no utilizar el flash en partes de tus documentos si lo que necesitas es darle algo de vistosidad o dinamismo.

5- No intentes engañar a Google con viejos trucos (que ya no funcionan) como el texto oculto (texto con el mismo color que el fondo de la página) ni recursos parecidos.

6- Intenta que tus páginas contengan texto, y que en dicho texto figuren los criterios por los que deseas ser encontrado en Google. Google mostrará las páginas en función de la información que pueda extraer de ellas, principalmente del titulo y los contenidos en texto.

7- Incrementa tu pagerank. Para ello intenta lograr enlaces desde otros sitios web hacia los tuyos, por ejemplo, mediante un intercambio con sitios web de temática similar o complementaria. Además, seguro que si los contenidos de tu sitio web son interesantes, más de un sitio incluirá un enlace hacia el tuyo sin que ni siquiera tengas que pedírselo.

8- Intenta no utilizar frames o marcos en tu página index. Google para indexar una página extrae información de ella, si tu página index esta compuesta de marcos, en realidad, los contenidos de esa página solo son el frameset, es decir las pocas líneas de código que establecen los marcos de la página.

9- Si tu sitio es dinámico (asp,php...) intenta que por lo menos la página index no lo sea, es más fácil que Google indexe una página estática que una dinámica.

10 - Dominio y hosting de pago en principio parece que facilita la indexación de los sitios, si no te supone una crisis económica, intenta registrar tu propio dominio y alojarlo en un hosting de pago y evita los alojamientos gratuitos sin domino.

Indices Robots y MetaBuscadores...

Principalmente existen tres tipos de buscadores:

Directorios o Índices
Motores de búsqueda (robots)
Metabuscadores

Los Directorios o índices:
Los directorios se basan fundamentalmente sobre el trabajo realizado por humanos.

Presentan la información sobre las webs registradas como si de un catálogo se tratase, ordenadas en cateogrias y subcategorias. Solo registran algunos de los datos de nuestra página. Como el título y la descripción del sitio web, datos que nos solicitarán durante el proceso de petición de alta de nuestro sitio web.

Estos datos que suministremos son revisados por operadores humanos. Al buscar en alguno de ellos, más que en función de los contenidos de la página, los resultados son mostrados según la temática de la web.

Es decir, si buscamos "ordenadores", aparecerán webs que de una forma u otra estén relacionados con la temática de ordenadores. Sus posibilidades de búsqueda de contenidos, en la mayoría de los casos, son inexistentes.

Son apropiados para buscar categorías, mas que informaciones específicas.

Algunos de los directorios más conocidos a nivel global son DOMOZ (directorio de Google) o el Directorio de Yahoo.

Son una buena alternativa de búsqueda para ambitos concretos y especializados, como en los casos de directorios científicos, bibliográficos etc.

Robots: (también conocidos como crawlers o spiders).
La mayoría de grandes buscadores internacionales que todos usamos y conocemos son de este tipo.

Todos estos buscadores, tienen uno o varios robots encargados de ir visitando todos los stios web existentes (Por ejemplo el robot de Google es Googlebot, el de Altavista es scooter...) recopilando información sobre los contenidos de las páginas. Fundamentalmente extraen información del texto que en ellas aparece y de otros parámetros como el título de las páginas.

Al realizar una consulta sobre este tipo de buscadores, ellos consultan su base de datos, con la información que han recogido de las páginas, y nos la presentan los resultados en función de los algorítmos que utiliza cada uno de ellos, principalmente utilizados para ordenar los resultados en función de su relevancia.

Una de las características más relevantes de los robots es que a partir de la página de entrada de nuestra web (index), son capaces de rastrear e indexar el sitio completo a partir de la estructura de enlaces interna.

Cada cierto tiempo, los robots revisan las webs, para actualizar los contenidos de su base de datos

Si buscamos por ejemplo "ordenadores". En los resultados que nos ofrecerá el motor de búsqueda, aparecerán páginas que contengan esta palabra en alguna parte de su texto, titulo etc.

La calidad de los resultados obtenidos por cada buscador vendrá determinada por sus parámetros de indexación, extracción de información de cada web y algoritmos de búsqueda, análisis contextual etc que cada uno de ellos haya desarrollado.

Sin ninguna duda, el motor de búsqueda más sofisticado y eficiente de la actualidad es Google.

Metabuscadores

Los metabuscadores, en realidad, no son buscadores, no disponen de una base de datos propia, sino que lo que hacen, es realizar consultas sobre las bases de datos de auténticos buscadores, robots y directorios, analizar los resultados, y presentar los suyos propios, reordenándolos en según su criterio.

Uno de los metabuscadores más conocidos es metacrawler.

Hosting en España o en USA ?

Son muy pocos los conocedores de las graves consecuencias tipo legal que puede suponer la contratación de un servicio de hostingo o alojamiento web, no sólo para el cliente sino también para el prestador del servicio.

La violación de la ley pude derivar en elevadas sanciones económicas que pueden oscilar de 300.000 hasta 600.000 euros. Por ello, se deben tener en cuenta aspectos legales a la hora de llevar a cabo este tipo de contratación cuando se contratan los servicios a una empresa de alojamiento web, empresa que es la encargada del mantenimiento del servicio y la que dispondrá de él físicamente (servidor).

Las Transferencias internacionales
Si el servidor está ubicado físicamente fuera de la Unión Europea, la normativa española aplicable a tal efecto (Ley Orgánica de Protección de Datos, Ley 15/99) técnicamente considera el tránsito de datos como una transferencia internacional, y exige que el país en el que esté físicamente el host o servidor posea un nivel de protección de datos de carácter personal equiparable al contemplado en dicha norma. Por otro lado, el Estado español tiene una relación de países considerados como cumplidores de dicho nivel, con lo cual, si el lugar de destino (servidor) está en ella, no habrá ningún problema, pero si no es así, podríamos estar infringiendo la ley. Por ello, es obligado informarnos bien acerca de dónde están situados físicamente los servidores de cualquier empresa antes de contratar el servicio de alojamiento web.

Excepciones
Existen una serie de excepciones como la que se recoge en el apartado e) del Art. 34 de la LOPD, en el que se expone que: «Cuando el afectado haya dado su consentimiento inequívoco a la transferencia prevista». Es decir, no se estaría incumpliendo la ley si la empresa propietaria del sitio web a través del que se ofrecen los servicios (imaginemos un sitio web que vende determinados artículos a través de la red), comunica a sus clientes previamente que sus datos van a ser remitidos a un servidor alojado en el extranjero y solicita su consentimiento para este fin y además, indica también los detalles de la empresa de destino que posee de dichos servidores y cómo ejercer ante la misma los derechos que, según la LOPD, asisten al titular de los datos, como son los de acceso, cancelación, oposición y rectificación.

Algunos ejemplos.
Pongámonos en el lugar una empresa X, española, que desea vender sus artículos en España. Contrata un hosting o alojamiento web junto con el servicio de pasarela de pagos para realizar el cobro on-line mediante tarjeta de crédito. Si dicha compañía no investiga lo suficiente, o la de alojamiento no le ha advertido ni documentado debidamente, es posible que dicho servicio se ofrezca a través de una tercera empresa (revendedora), que, a su vez, tenga un servidor alojado, por ejemplo, en Australia, país que no tiene el visto bueno de la APD hoy por hoy. En este caso se estaría infringiendo la LOPD.

Otro ejemplo frecuente puede ser el de una empresa española X, que contrata su servicio de hospedaje con otra de la misma nacionalidad. Esta última (la empresa proveedora del alojamiento web) no es realmente la dueña de los servidores, sino que los subcontrata con una tercera (práctica muy habitual), que además, le ha permitido usar su propio logotipo de cara a sus clientes, quedando oculto el de de la empresa que realmente cede el uso de sus servidores, así como que dichas máquinas están, por ejemplo, en USA, y que no se encuentran en la relación de empresas de Puerto Seguro. En este caso se volvería a estar infringiendo la ley.

El caso de Estados Unidos
Aunque parezca una paradoja, EEUU no es un país incluido en las órdenes citadas en la LOPD, por lo que, en principio, si no se obtiene el consentimiento previo de los afectados (insistimos, previo, y no posterior), estaríamos realizando una transferencia ilegal, que estaría sancionada económicamente entre cifras que pueden variar de 300.000 a 600.000 euros.

Las autoridades norteamericanas han reaccionado y han llegado a un acuerdo con la Unión Europea, mediante el cual, el Departamento de Comercio de los EEUU se encargará de incorporar a un directorio, llamado Safe Harbor o Puerto Seguro, a aquellas empresas que cumplan unos requisitos mínimos de protección de datos, de modo que éstas tengan el visto bueno de las autoridades comunitarias. Por lo tanto, en el caso de decidir contratar los servicios de una compañía de USA, tendremos que acceder a dicha relación para estar tranquilos de que la transferencia está dentro de la legalidad y es aprobada por las autoridades de protección de datos de la UE. Cabe destacar que a pesar de la inmensa cantidad de empresas norteamericanas proveedoras de servicios de alojamiento web, son muy pocas las incluidas en dicha relación.

Mentirosos que ofrecen webhosting

Como encuentro a un mentiroso en webhosting?

"Tienes pensado contratar tu plan de alojamiento web, de hoy no pasa, estas harto de la publicidad que ponen en tu página alojada en un servidor gratuito, encima hay dias que va lentísima.... hoy has decidido que es el día, vas a contratar un alojamiento web como dios manda" ...

¿Tienes ese pensamiento en tu cabeza?... a continuación te facilitamos algunos aspectos que debes tener en cuenta a la hora de elegir la empresa en la que contratar tu nuevo alojamiento web.

Mentira 1: El centro de datos

En españa existen más de 1.000 empresas que ofrecen el servicio de alojamiento web. Si consultas sus sitios web verás que como que existe una enorme cantidad de ellos que habla de su centro de datos pripio de 1000 metros cuadrados, su superseguridad, sus sistmas de refrigeración y de vigilancia... Pues bueno, en España existen aproximadamente 30 centros de datos de internet con la infraestructura necesaria que garantice un buen servicio. Por lo tanto, muchas de estas empresas que alardean de centro de datos propio te están engañando, de hecho, muy pocas con las empresas que podrian permitirse mantener una infraestructura de tal calibre.
¿No sería más fácil y honrado decir a sus clientes que sus servidores estan alojados en tal data center en lugar de decir que es suyo?.

Pillalos: Preguntales si es posible visitar su centro de datos.

Mentira 2: Nuestros servidores se encuentran en España
Existen proveedores de alojamiento web cuyos servidores se encuentran en EEUU o en otro pais, sin embargo, en su sitio web dicen que los servidores están en España o omiten esta información. En principio el servicio va a funcionar exáctamente igual. La razón por la que se tienen los servidores en EEUU es porque allí los costes son inferiores, sobre todo cuando hablamos de tráfico de datos. El único problema que existe es que si no se advierte al cliente, se puede incurrir en un delito grave en el caso de que nuestra web trate datos personales de nuestros clientes o empresas (Ley Orgánica 15/99, de 13 de diciembre, de Protección de Datos de Carácter Personal).

En el caso de que nuestra web no trate con dados personales perfectamente puede estar alojada en cualquier servidor de cualquier pais (siempre y cuando sus contenidos no vulneren las leyes del país en cuestión).

Sospecha: Te ofrecen cantidades enormes de transferencia mensual (transferencia ilimitada, 200 Gb de tráfico ...), entonces, con mucha probabilidad el servidor se encuentra en EEUU,(claro está, si estamos hablando de un plan de alojamiento web, en el caso de un servidor dedicado la transferencia ofrecida puede llegar hasta los 500 Gb/mes)

Pillalos: utiliza nuestra herramienta, introduce en la caja de búsqueda inferior el nombre de domino o IP cuya ubicación geográfica deseas conocer y pulsa sobre "comprobar".

Descubre el pais de donde se aloja esta IP o este dominio

Esta prueba por supuesto no es fiable al 100%, ya que puede darse el caso de que el servidor del dominio sobre el que has hecho la prueba este en un país y el servidor sobre el que te van a configurar tu alojamiento esté en otro, pero por regla general, puedes imaginar que si la empresa tiene su propio servidor en otro pais, con el tuyo pasará lo mismo.

Esta prueba puede ser más fiable si conoces a alguien que ya tiene un alojamiento web contratado en esa empresa, haz la prueba sobre el dominio de tu conocido.

Mentira 3: Tenemos más de 20000 dominios registrados.
Pues bueno, en España no llegamos a la cifra de 600.000 dominios registrados en total. Si sumas por encima la cantidad de dominios que cada empresa de servicios de Internet dice que tiene sobrepasamos los 2 millones.

Pillalos: Entra en webhosting.info figuran las empresas españolas que tienen registrados más de 3.500 dominios y la cantidad de dominios con sus DNS.

Mentira 4: La gran empresa
Somos una empresa con una infraestructura envidiable, 300.000 trabajadores a tu disposición y un soporte 24x7

Pillalos: Cualquier empresa seria mostrará sus datos fiscales en su sitio web, incluyendo su CIF, dirección completa de sus oficinas y teléfono de contacto. Si estos datos no aparecen en su web, empezamos mal. Si te es posible, intenta visitar sus oficinas. En cuanto al soporte 24x7, llámales a eso de las 2 de la madrugada o realizales una consulta via e-mail o ticket y analiza su tiempo de respuesta.

Mentira 5: Somos registradores acreditados por ICANN
Muchos proveedores de servicios de Internet tienen la manía de decir que son registradores acreditados por ICANN (Registars). No es nada malo no serlo siempre y cuando des un buen servicio.

Espacio en disco: Espacio en Disco a veces llamado Espacio Web
Es la capacidad de espacio que se le permite utilizar en el servidor. En cada plan de alojamiento web vendrá estipulada una cantidad de espacio. Se mide en Gb (GigaBytes) de espacio en los planes de alojamiento con gran cantidad de espacio (1Gb = 1024Mb) o en Mb (MegaBytes) en planes con menos cantidad de espacio (1 Mb = 1024 Kb).

Cuenas de correo (POP)
POP es la abreviación del inglés "Post Office Protocol" y es un método en que los programas de e-mail, tales como Outlook, Eudora, etc., usan para recibir y enviar e-mails. Cada cuenta POP tiene su unico usuario y contraseña. Al contratar su plan de alojamiento las cuentas o buzones de correo irán asociados a su nombre de dominio. Ej: usuario@sudominio.com

Alias de Correo
Los alias te permitirán configurar direcciones de E-Mail que podrás recibir sin necesidad de que hayas creado los buzones de correo en tu alojamiento web. Los Alias pueden ser configurados sólo para enviar correo a una dirección de tu dominio. Por ejemplo puedes tener usuario1@tudominio.com (Alias) y usuario2@tudominio.com (Alias) que sean enviadas a usuarioprincipal@tudominios.com sin que necesariamente existan esas cuentas de correo.

Autorrespondedores de email
Los autorrespondedores son respuestas automáticas que son enviados inmediatamente cuando se recibe un E-Mail en una dirección específica. Son una buena manera de hacer saber a quien nos ha escrito que hemos recibido su e-mail correctamente. Tambien puedenser utilizados en periodos de vacaciones para hacer saber a quien nos escribe de la situación y que no se alarme por la demora de nuestra contestación.

Listas de correo
Las listas de correo se ejecutan en el servidor y permiten enviar e-mails a múltiples destinatarios a la vez de forma cómoda y sencilla.

Webmail
Es un servicio normalmente incluido en cualquier plan de alojamiento web que te permitirá leer y enviar correos a través de su navegador de Internet. Mediante su utilización podrás consultar y enviar correo desde cualquier ordenador e incluso borrar correos no deseados antes de descargarlos con tu cliente de correo.

Redirección de E-Mail
Las redirecciones de E-Mail te permiten hacer que el correo que es recibido en un buzón de correo de tu dominio sea enviado automáticamente a otra cuenta de correo que especifiques, ya sea de tu dominio o no.

Transferencia de datos o tráfico mensual
Es la cantidad de trafico de datos de tu sitio. En dicho tráfico se contabilizan todos los datos que entran y salen de tu plan de alojamiento, incluyendo la descarga por los navegadores al visitar tu sitio web de los documentos html e imágenes lo componene, los correos electrónicos que envias y recibes, los datos que subes/descargas por FTP...

Panel de Control
El Panel de Control es una herramienta que permite al usuario de un plan de alojamiento web administrarlo y configurarlo de forma sencilla. Desde el panel de control, entre otras funciones se pueden crear y configurar los buzones de correo, consultar las estadísticas de visitas a nuestra web, consultar la transferencia de datos consumida, instalar aplicaciones preinstaladas, crear subdominios ...

Subdominio
Un subdominio es una extensión de tu dominio y tiene la forma subdominio.tudominio.com. Cualquier subdominio que creees en tu alojamiento, tendrá un directorio asociado y será accesible mediante la dirección url http://subdominio.tudominio.com

Sirve por ejemplo para ofrecer desde tu dominio, nuevas direcciones de dominio para las distintas secciones de su web site, productos, intalar determinadas aplicaciones ...

FTP
Abreviación del inglés File Transfer Protocol - Es un protocolo de transferencia de archivos utilizado para la transferencia de archivos entre cliente-servidor o servidor-servidor.

Cuentas FTP
Desde tu plan de alojamiento podrás crear cuentas FTP para subir o descargar archivos desde tu ordenador a tu espacio en el servidor de forma rápida y sencilla.

Gestor o cliente FTP
Es un software desarrollado para gestionar cómodamente tus cuentas ftp. Se instala en tu ordenador local y en el configurarás la cuenta FTP que creaste en tu alojamiento. Calculando el tráfico de nuestra web

Como hemos dicho, la transferencia de nuestro plan de alojamiento web es uno de los puntos más importantes a la hora de contratar uno. Si sobrepasamos la transferencia estipulada en nuestro plan podemos llevarnos disgustos del tipo: factura extra o corte del servicio hasta el próximo mes.

Cada vez que alguien visita tu sitio web, necesita cargar páginas con texto, gráficos, y otros archivos, a todo esto debemos sumar todos aquellos archivos que subimos/descargamos vía FTP y el correo que enviamos y recibimos a través de las cuentas de correo de nuestro alojamiento web durante un més. La suma de todos estos factores será la transferencia mensual consumida.

Con este script podrás calcular la transferencia que necesitará tu plan de alojamiento web de una forma aproximada (recuerda, aproximada).

Puntos clave de un plan de hosting

Recuerda, antes de contratar un plan de alojamiento es indispensable que tengas en cuenta:

1 - La transferencia: Asegurate de que el plan hosting que tienes pensado contratar cuenta con la transferencia necesaria para tu sitio web. Existen muchos proveedores que ofrecen planes de alojamiento web por debajo de los 500 Mb de transferencia mensual. Si vas a contar con un sitio web de grandes dimensiones o vas a realizar un uso intensivo de tus cuentas de correo, intenta disponer por lo menos de 1Gb de trafico mensual.

2 - El soporte técnico: Antes de contratar tu hosting, comprueba que la empresa en la que lo vas a hacer es confiable. ¿Como saberlo?... pues a priori es complicado, por regla general, las empresas que ya llevan mucho tiempo en la Red suelen serlo (experiencia, continuidad, solvencia..), pero no por ello otras menos conocidas o importantes no lo son. Antes de contratar tu alojamiento web, llamales por teléfono, comprueba su calidad de atención al cliente, prueba a enviarles algún "ticket" si tienen este tipo de soporte, comprueba que disponen de oficinas (en principio, una empresa seria mostrará en su web sus datos, su dirección y su teléfono).

3 - El plan adecuado: No te ciegues con el espacio en disco y fijate en otras características como la posibilidad de utilizar tus propios cgis, el tipo de bases de datos que puedes gestionar (si lo necesitas), si ejecuta PHP o ASP ... elige un hosting que realmente se ajuste a las necesidades de tu web.

4 - Escalabilidad: Elije una empresa que te permita cambiar de alojamiento en cualquier momento sin perder el dinero que has pagado por el. ¿Imaginas que hoy contratas tu hosting por 1 año y en 5 meses tu sitio web necesita añadir nuevas funcionalidades?. Elige un proveedor que descuente de tu nuevo plan de alojamiento web todo el periodo no consumido al pasar a otro plan de alojamiento.

5- Contrato: Al contratar tu plan de alojamiento web, lee detenidamente el contrato (últimamente todos tenemos la costumbre de pulsar "aceptar" como acto reflejo), así no te llevarár sorpresas y podrás exigir cualquier deficiencia que pueda existir. En el contrato de alojamiento web suele venir estipulada la transferencia mensual, el tiempo on-line del servicio al que se compromete la empresa y otros aspectos importantes.

Alojamiento web ... ¿gratuito o de pago?

Hace unos años, la mayor parte de los sitios web personales e incluso de pequeñas empresas estaban alojados en sitios web gratuitos. La razón era sobre todo los elevados precios de los dominios y de los planes de alojamiento web.

Por ejemplo, en 1998 en España, una de los ISP más conocidos de nuestro país tenia las siguientes tarifas (iva no incluido):

Alojamiento web 10 Mb de espacio en disco: 3.500 pts/mes , es decir 21€/mes
Buzón de correo para el plan de alojamiento: 400 pts/mes, es decir 2,4 €/mes

Por supuesto, ni habar de bases de datos ni complejos cgis

En estos momentos, el recurrir a un hosting gratuito estaba más que justificado, incluso eran muchas las pequeñas-medianas empresas que lo hacían, ya que manener un pequeño sitio web (mostrando solo texto y unas pocas imágenes y con una cuenta de correo) suponía un desembolso cercano a los 300 euros al año.

En la actualidad, junto con el notable incremento en la implementación de Internet a todos los niveles, y la aparición de numerosas empresas de Servicios de Internet, se ha llegado a una regularización (dismunción) muy importante en los precios estipulados por los ISP en cuanto al registro de dominios y alojamiento web, llegando a convertirse en unos servicios al alcance de todos.

Hoy en día podemos encontrar planes de alojamiento con las siguientes características:

Alojamiento web 100 Mb de espacio en disco incluyendo 10 o más buzones de correo: 4€/mes

Es decir, podemos encontrar un alojamiento web decente por menos de 50 euros al año
Desventajas del alojamiento gratuito y de pago

Es tu decisión, a continuación os mostramos algunas ventajas y desventajas de los alojamientos gratuitos y de pago.

Desventajas del Hosting Gratuito:

1 - La principal desventaja que tiene el alojamiento gratuito, es la cantidad de publicidad que la empresa que lo ofrece insetará en nuestro sitio web, publicidad sobre la que la mayoría de las veces, no tendremos ningún control ni siguiera sobre sus contenidos.

2- Los proveedores que ofrecen alojamiento web gratuito, poco a poco han ido incluyendo restricciones sobre sus servicios. La mayoría restringe el tráfico del sitio web, por ejemplo, cuando de un sitio se bajan más de 1 megas al mes, se dejarán de servir páginas hasta el siguiente més. Otras restricciones por ejemplo son: sólo se sirven imágenes si están incluidas dentro de su servidor, no se permite la publicación de archivos superiores a un determinado tamaño en Kb o bien de determinadas extensiones (.mp3, .avi ...). En muy pocos casos podremos utilizar nuestros propios CGIs o incluso no tendremos la publicidad de utilizar PHP y ni pensar en el uso de ASP.

3- Es muy complicado que nos ofrezcan un soporte técnico de calidad, para poder resolver nuestras dudas o incidencias.

4- Por supuesto (y lógicamente), no tendrán ninguna responsabilidad sobre el funcionamiento del sitio web, o de la conservación de los archivos publiciados, si en algún momento el servidor no funciona no puedes pedir cuentas a nadie, y si por desgracia desapareciese tu página (averia de un disco duro por ejemplo), puede que no la restauren (no existe sistema de backup) o bien la restauren no actualizada (los backups se realizan entre amplios intervalos de tiempo).

Desventajas del Hosting de pago:

1 - Pues eso, tenemos que pagar.
2 -Elige bien a tu empresa proveedora, no sea que vayas a contratar un alojamiento de pago que vaya a funcionarte peor que uno gratuito.

Entonces que hago ... ¿Pago o no pago por mi alojamiento web?
En mi opinión:

- si tu sitio web va a ser importante para ti no debes dudarlo ni un instante, contrata un alojamiento web de pago, tendrás muchas más funcionalidades, mayor seguridad, darás una imágen mucho más seria y confiable (sin publiciadad, con tu propio dominio, con tus propias cuentas de correo...).

- si solo buscas entretenerte, la página no es más que una mera distracción, estas aprendiendo a hacer tu primera página web ... empieza por un alojamiento gratuito, no te costará un euro. Siempre estarás a tiempo de contratar un alojamiento de pago en el futuro.

Consejo: si además vas a registrar un dominio, no lo hagas en un proveedor gratuido, si algún día dedices contratar un alojamiento web de pago, por experiencia, trasladar el dominio se convierte en una odisea. Aunque optes por un hosting gratuito, registra tu dominio en un ISP de calidad.

En que fijarse al suscribirse a una empresa de hosting?

¿Qué alojamiento web necesito ? Antes de empezar a desarrollar nuestro proyecto web, o sobre todo, antes de contratar un plan de alojamiento web decidir correctamente que plan de alojamiento web es el que necesitamos.

Puede darse el caso incluso de que se nos pueda ocurrir registrar nuestro dominio y contratar un plan de hosting antes de finalizar nuestra web, esta decisión puede convertirse en un error, que aunque no debería tener consecuencias graves (cualquier empresa proveedora no debería, en principio, tener ningún problema en cambiarnos el tipo de plan aunque no haya finalizado nuestra contratación), si puede retrasar la publicación de nuestro proyecto en Internet o darnos un susto al suponer un incremento sobre el presupuesto que habiamos destinado a nuestra presencia en la red.

¿En qué debo fijarme principalmente?

1 - La plataforma
El primer paso es determinar que requisitos técnicos va a demandar el funcionamiento de nuestro sitio web, principalmente en aquellos casos en que nuestro proyecto va a requerir de programación o de la utilización de bases de datos.

Si nuestro sitio web va a ser "corporativo/ demostrativo" y no va a recurrir de bases de datos podemos optar por un hosting bajo linux (sistema opartivo que corre el servidor), ya que son más económicos y obtendremos el mismo rendimiento.

Si por el contrario, nuestro sitio web va a contener aplicaciones on-line y va a necesitar de programación y bases de datos para su funcionamiento (extranet, registros de clientes, aplicaciones ...) deberemos de determinar bien nosotros o bien el desarrollador del sitio (si va a ser un tercero), domina o tiene preferencia por PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) (Linux / Windows) o por el contrario es usuario de ASP (Active Server Page) (Windows) y si la base de datos va a ser desarrollada en MySql (Linux / Windows) o en SqlServer (Windows).

2 - La transferencia mensual
Podemos definir la transferencia de un sitio web como la suma de todos aquellos datos que entran y salen del servidor, ya sea a través del correo electrónico, archivos que se descargan en el ordenador de los usuarios de nuestra web al navegar por ella, datos que subimos o descargamos a través de nuestra cuenta FTP ... La transferencia en el 99% de los casos es contabilizada por las empresas de servicios de internet de forma mensual, volviendo a 0 el contador de trafico consumido al principio de cada mes.

La transferencia mensual, es incluso más importante que el espacio en disco cuando hablamos de un plan de alojamiento web. Muchas veces, sobre todo si somos usuarios noveles, podemos equivocarnos al fijarnos solo en la cantidad de espacio en disco de un plan de alojamiento web, dejando de lado o no dando importancia a la transferencia mensual del mismo. Si por desgracia contratamos un plan de hosting con una escasa transferencia, podemos llevarnos el disgusto de que a final de mes recibamos una factura que no esperábamos en concepto de la transferencia excedida durante dicho periodo o en los casos más radicales cortarán nuestro servicio hasta el próximo mes.

Si nuestro sitio web en principio va a ser de unas dimensiones reducidas (pequeña empresa pequeña o un sitio personal) y no vamos a realizar un uso intensivo del correo electrónico (envios masivos, envios de documentos muy pesados...) rara vez consumirá más de 1GB al mes de transferencia mensual.

3- El espacio en disco
Por regla general es el aspecto en el que menos escatiman las empresas que ofrecen alojamiento web y en muchas ocasiones es el "gancho" que utilizan para atraer nuevos clientes, resaltando el espacio en disco sobre otras características que a la larga son más importantes, como la transferencia mensual tal y como hemos dicho antes.

El espacio en disco la cantidad de espacio del servidor de la que podremos disponer para alojar los archivos que componen nuestro sitio web, las bases de datos y nuestro correo correo electrónico principalmente.

Por regla general un sitio web tenderá a ocupar el menor espacio en disco posible, ya que cualquier desarrollador o diseñador web intenterá optimizar al máximo los archivos que lo componen para facilitar una navegación más rápida y cómoda a sus visitantes. Un sitio web pequeño, mediano, rara vez ocupará más de 20 Mb de espacio, a menos que nuestro sitio web ya cuente con elementos como bases de datos que almacenen grandes cantidades de registros
o extensas librerias de imágenes.

Al contratar tu plan de alojamiento web, calcula aproximadamente el espacio que ocupará tu web y el espacio que crees que deberias destinar a almacenar correo electrónico (aunque siempre es aconsejable descargarlo a tu ordenador y borrarlo del servidor para evitar ocupar un espacio innecesario).

4- El panel de control
Es muy aconsejable que nuestro plan de alojamiento web cuente con un panel de control para su gestión. La existencia de un panel de control (a ser posible en nuestro idioma), nos permitirá crear y modificar nuestras cuentas de correo, controlar la transferencia mensual consumida, nos dará acceso a nuestras estadísticas web, nos permitirá crear subdominios, crear y configurar nuestras cuentas FTP ... Personalmente recomendaría PLESK o Ensim por su potencia y facilidad de uso.

5 - Las cuentas de correo
La contratación de un plan de alojamiento web incluye la posibilidad de configurar un determinado número de buzones de correo electrónico con nuestro nombre de dominio. Este número de cuentas de correo variará en función de las características de cada plan de alojamiento web de cada compañía en particular. Antes de contratar el plan de alojamiento no está de más echar cálculos y preveer cuantas cuentas de correo podemos llegar a necesitar.

Estos son los aspectos fundamentales que debes tener en cuenta al contratar tu hosting, a partir de aquí, por supuesto, cuanto más te ofrezca una compañía mejor.

¿Qué es el Alojamiento web Hosting? Seguramente, la gran mayoría de usuarios de Internet ya saben que es un plan de alojamiento web o hosting, no obstante, para aquellos que acabais de entrar en este mundillo, debeis saber que no basta con registrar un nombre de dominio para poder tener vuestra web, necesitais tambien un hosting o alojamiento.

El Hosting o alojamiento web es un espacio en el disco duro de un servidor que tiene conexión permanente a Internet y que es alquilado generalmente por un usuario (persona u organización) para publicar información en Internet (generalmente en forma de sitio web) a una empresa prestadora de servicios de Internet.

Este espacio se identifica dentro del Internet por medio de una dirección IP que está relacionada directamente con un dominio de la forma www.nombredeldominio.com, a través del cual todo el mundo puede acceder lo que el usuario publique en la dirección de Internet que haya elegido.

En otras palabras, supongamos que hemos diseñado una web y una vez terminada nos interesa publicarla para darla a conocer, ¿cómo y dónde colocar nuestra información para que sea visible por los navegantes?. Nosotros podemos ver nuestro propia página web en nuestro ordenador personal, pero a menos que la publiquemos en espacio de un servidor de Internet será imposible ofrecer un acceso cómodo al resto del mundo.

Cuanto sale un dominio ?

En realidad es complicado opinar sobre lo que debe costar un dominio, ya que cada compañía es en definitiva la que establece los precios a su voluntad en una economía de libre mercado.

Existen dos grupos de empresas que pueden ofrecen el servicio de registro de dominos:

- Los Registrars o registradores directos acreditados por ICANN (Organismo encargado de la gestión de nombres de dominio). Actualmente existen aproximadamente solo unos 220 registradores acreditados por ICANN (Registrars), lo que significa que el resto de empresas a nivel mundial son revendedores o intermediarios.

- Los Registradores intermediarios, es decir, todas las empresas que ofrecen servicio de registro de dominios a excepción de aproximadamente las 220 a las que hemos hecho referencia antes. En este caso, cuando un cliente registra un dominio, las empresas intermediarias en realidad registran sus dominios sobre estos 220 Registradores (Registrars) directos.

Ahora bien, el que una empresa sea intermediaria (el 99,99% de las empresas que ofrecen el servicio de registro de dominios lo son), no implica en absoluto ninguna perdida de calidad del servicio, sino que muchos casos supone una mejora sustancial sobre el mismo, ya que "a medio camino" entre el Registrar y el cliente final, la empresa intermediaria que ofrece el registro de dominio suele (y debería) incluir servicios de valor añadido para su cliente, como gestión del registro en el idioma de su país, inclusión de cuentas de correo, interfaz propia para la gestión del dominio, servicios de alerta de expiración ....

Para establecer el precio del registro de dominios cada empresa Registradora (Registrar), cargará un porcentaje (beneficio que desea obtener) sobre los precios establecidos por ICANN para los dominios .com - .net y .org por ejemplo oscila entre los 5$ y 6$ en función del número de dominios registrados a excepción de algunos grandes registradores que pueden obtener precios incluso más económicos.

Es decir, a partir del precio base de ICANN, cada registrador directo establecerá su política de precios, tanto para sus clientes directos como para las empresas intermediarias que registren a través de ellos en función del beneficio que deseen obtener.

Por otra parte, las empresas revendedoras, en función de los precios que consigan negociar con las empresas registradores establecerán los suyos.

Actualmente, los precios del registro de dominios en España varían entre los 8 y los 34 euros. Siendo además los registradores acreditados por ICANN los que establecen las tarifas más elevadas 25 y 34 euros, con lo que están cargando hasta un 640% sobre sus precios de coste.

En mi modesta opinión, la diferencia entre la calidad del servicio ofrecido y el precio es desorbitada, existiendo empresas que establecen precios abusivos para un servicio casi idéntico al de otras y atribuyéndolo a una mayor calidad, mayor calidad prácticamente inexistente en el caso del producto al que nos referimos (dominios) y que en todo caso sería justificable en otro tipo de servicio como alojamiento web o máquinas dedicadas en el que se puede argumentar mayor calidad del servidor, menor número de caidas, soporte técnico de calidad...

La mejor opción a la hora de registrar un dominio es asegurarnos de que la empresa sobre la que lo vamos a registrar es fiable, su precio es razonable y nos ofrece las mínimas posibilidades exigibles para nuestro dominio: gestión de DNS y redirección automáticas y gratuitas.

En cuanto al precio, en mi opinión un precio que no supere los 13 euros (¿un 80-100% de beneficios sobre un producto es suficiente no?).

Que deben ofrecer al registrar nombres de dominio

A continuación os mostramos, los aspectos más importantes ordenados por prioridad que debemos tener en cuenta a la hora de registrar nuestros dominios para no llevarnos ningún disgusto:
Gestión de los datos del dominio.

Deben de proporcionarte un proceso de registro mediante el que tu puedas establecer todos los datos de contacto de tu dominio. Recuerda que el dominio es tuyo, por lo que como mínimo, tanto el contacto administrativo como el registrante debes ser tu.

El contacto administrativo: es la persona o entidad que tiene acceso a los datos del dominio, pudiendo cambiar en cualquier momento los contactos asociados a él, servidores de nombres (DNS), redirecciones, autorizar traslados y renovaciones de dominio. Asegurate de introducir en el e-mail del contacto administrativo una dirección de correo electrónico que tengas activa y que consultes habitualmente.

El registrante: es el propietario legal del dominio y a la factura de compra debe de ir a su nombre, por supuesto, puede ser un persona física o bien una persona jurídica. Esta persona posee todo los derechos sobre su nombre de dominio por el período de tiempo contratado con el Registrador. Esta persona o entidad es la única autorizada para ceder los derechos sobre su nombre de dominio durante el período contratado con el registrador.

¡ Jamás registres un dominio en una empresa en la que no puedes introducir estos datos !

Recuerda,si es posible, no utilices direcciones e-mail de su propio dominio para los datos del contacto administrativo, ¿imaginas que por ejemplo expira tu dominio por un descuido ... como te avisarán entonces?

Estabilidad de la empresa

Asegurate de que la empresa en la que vas a registrar tu dominio es una empresa consolidada, ¿te imaginas que a los 7 u 8 meses de registrar su dominio esta empresa desaparece?, no perderás tu dominio, pero no imaginas los quebraderos de cabeza y el tiempo que puede suponer su recuperación.

Actualmente existen se crean muchas pequeñas empresas que pese a su admirable voluntad y esfuerzo no consiguen mantenerse en el mercado debido a la fuerte competencia y la lucha de precios, empresas que lamentablemente tienen un ciclo de vida muy corto.

Herramientas de gestión del dominio.

Al regisrar un dominio deben ofrecerte herramientas para gestionarlo de forma eficiente y sencilla. Normalmente deben ofrecerte estas herramientas bajo un panel de control para tu dominio o una extranet de cliente. No registres tu dominio en una empresa que no dispone de estas herramientas aunque te diga que ellos mismos realizarán cualquier cambio que les pidas (acaban tardando siglos, da lugar a errores y no tendrás la libertad de realizar los cambios en el momento justo que tu decidas).

Mediante estas herramientas automátizadas como mínimo debes de poder:

- Modificar/actualizar los datos de tu dominio (registrante, administrativo, tecnico).

- Modificar o establecer las DNS de tu dominio, de esta manera puedes hacer que tu dominio apunte al proveedor de alojamiento que desees, ya sea la empresa con la que registraste el dominio o con cuaquier otra.

- Redirigir tu dominio a cualquier URL

Por supuesto, también es muy positivo que te ofrezcan otras características, que si no tan importantes, si que son muy útiles, características como:

- Avisos automáticos de expiración de tu dominio (para que no lo pierdas por un descuido)

- Posibilidad de autorrenovación (idem)

Soporte en español.

Nunca está de más poder comunicar con personas que hablan tu mismo idioma y en tu mismo horario, si se presenta alguna incidencia o tienes alguna duda, seguro que te entiendes mejor con ellos.

Los paises con mas dominios activos

En el primer trimestre de 2004 se registraron cerca de 5 millones de nuevos nombres de dominio según un estudio llevado a cabo por VeriSign, del que se puede proyectar que se registrarán entre 19 y 21 millones de dominios durante todo el año. Estos datos reflejan que este 2004 presentará el mayor crecimiento de registros de nuevos dominios en toda la historia de internet, con un crecimiento de cerca del 21% sobre el año 2003.

En la actualidad existen cerca de 63 millones de nombres de dominio registrados, según VeriSign.

Además existe una clara tendencia al uso "útil" de los dominios (y no solo como mera protección del nombre o la marca), ya que se estima que aproximadamente el 72% de los nombres de dominio están apuntando o resuelven a una página web, a diferencia del 55% de 2002.

Con total seguridad, este gran crecimiento del número de dominios registrado, está fuertemente relacionado por una parte, con la cada vez más intensa penetración de internet en la vida cotidiana, haciendo que empresas y particulares asuman como normal el disponer de un sitio web y sobre todo con la fuerte disminución de los precios del registro de dominos (el registro de dominios costaba originalmente 70 dólares cuando la firma Network Solutions, controlaba el mercado frente a los 7 a 15 euros que puede costarnos ahora).

En cuanto a los tipos de dominio más registrados, destaca sobre todos ellos el dominio .com con el 45% de todos los registros, seguido del grupo de registros por países o territoriales, que aglutina un 40%. Muy por debajo aparecen los dominio con la terminación .netque solo representan el 8% del mercado, al igual que otros dominios como .org, .biz, .name, .info etc que representan entre todos ellos el restante 7%.

En España, a diferencia de otros paises, encontramos 2 realidades muy distintas:

- por una parte, el registro de dominios genéricos o internacionales siguen un patrón de elevado crecimiento, aunque a un ritmo inferior de otros paises europeos.

- por otra, los dominios territoriales bajo el código de país .ES, están experimentando un reducido crecimiento, bajísimosi lo comparamos con el crecimiento de dominios territoriales de otros paises como Alemania, Reino Unido o Francia.

De hecho, en España, los dominios genéricos representan el 88 % del total de los dominios registrados por españoles (7,1 veces más genéricos que .es) mientras que en Alemania es el 25% y en Reino Unido el 27%. Basta comparar las cifras mensuales de registros de dominios genéricos y territoriales.

- Media de registro de dominios internacionales mensual: 8.500 netos* aprox.

- Media de registro de dominos territoriales mensual: 300 nuevos dominios de segundo nivel (.es) y 850 de tercer nivel (.com..es, .nom.es ...) para un total de 1.150 aprox.

Debido a este escaso numero de registros se plantea además un serio problema con los Agentes Registradores, ya que el contrato que deben de firmar con el NIC les obliga a un minimo de 1.000 registros al año (además de susbcribir un seguro de responsabilidad civil por valor de medio millon de euros, una fianza de 6.000 euros y una cuota de entrada de 2.000 Euros). La media de registros actual obligará a rescindir los contratos a la gran mayoria de la treintena de Agentes Registradores existentes por incumplimiento de esa clausula del contrato.

Los dominios territoriales bajo el codigo de pais .ES, ¿un desastre?
Durante el mes de Septiembre de 2004 se registraron en España un total de 532 nuevos registros bajo el dominio ".es". Este dato es el peor resultado de los últimos dos años. Mientras tanto, como sigue siendo habitual, en Alemania se registraron 92.703 dominios (174 veces mas que en España) y en Reino Unido 93.996 (176 veces mas).

Quizá la raiz del problema esté en el exagerado precio de los dominios .es (aproximadamente 110 euros) junto con las trabas burocráticas y la lentitud en su registro (aunque desde 2004 se ha acelerado y agilizado el proceso) en comparación con los dominos internacionales y el escaso interés de los usuarios españoles por los dominios territoriales de 3er nivel aunque sean más fáciles y baratos de registrar.

La única solución para cambiar la realidad de los dominos.es parece ser cambiar el actual sistema de dominios, gestionado por Red.es a través de ESNIC.

Problemas con nombres de dominio (ciberokupas)

Los nombres de dominio se han visto afectados por la acción de especuladores que registran nombres de dominio genéricos* (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz) que coinciden con nombres de marcas o empresas ya existentes con el fin de obtener una cuantiosa compensación económica vendiendo esos nombres de dominio a precios en ocasiones desorbitados.

Actualmente, estos casos tienen "solución", y las empresas afectadas pueden demandar al registrante de su domnio a la OMPI (Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual), que a través del Reglamento de la política uniforme de solución de contoversias en materia de nombres de dominio fallará en la gran mayoría de casos a favor de la empresa demandante cuyo nombre de empresa o marca coincida con el nombre de dominio en disputa siempre y cuando:

1) que el domino registrado sea idéntico o similar a la marca del demandante, creando así confusión respecto a ella.

2) que el titular del dominio no tenga derechos o intereses legítimos respecto a la marca que usa como dominio.

3) que el registro del dominio se haya efectuado de mala fe por su titular, entendiéndose mala fe como:

a) Que haya indicios suficientes de que el titular registral del dominio lo ha registrado, fundamentalmente, con el fin de vender, alquilar, o ceder el dominio al titular de la marca o a un competidor de éste, por un valor que supere los costos relacionados directamente con el dominio.

b) se haya registrado dicho dominio a fin de evitar que el titular de dicha marca refleje la misma con un dominio igual, siempre y cuando el titular del dominio haya efectuado una conducta de ese tipo.

c) que el titular del dominio lo registre con la intención de atraer, con ánimo de lucro a dicho sitio web, o a otro que esté en línea con él, originando así confusión en cuanto a la fuente, patrocinio, afiliación o promoción de dicho sitio web

d) cualquier otro supuesto del que se pueda desprender que ha habido mala fe por parte del titular del dominio.

Pero al parecer existe una especie de doble rasero mediante el que se acusa a la Organización Mundial de Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI), de proteger los intereses de las grandes empresas, empresas que según los estudios el 80% de las disputas de dominios se resuelven a favor de los propietarios de la marca incluso en casos no demasiado claros y en los que en principio, al parecer, no se está llevando a cabo ningún uso fraudulento del nombre de domino.

* Este tipo de dominois pueden ser registrados por cualquier persona o particular teniendo como único condiconante ser el primero en registrarlo. Los dominios territoriales como por ejemplo los .ES (dominio territorial de segundo nivel perteneciente a españa) suelen tener unas normativas mucho más estrictas, como por ejemplo ser una empresa u organizaciones legalmente constituida o una persona física que sea titulare de la marca registrada.

Redemption Period (periodo de gracia)

Cuando un dominio expira, las autoridades competentes para el registro de dominios en primera instancia (Verisign para los .com y .net, PIR paral os .org, Affilias para los .info y Neulevel para los .biz por ejemplo) establecen un periodo de gracia durante el cual, el registrante y solo el registránte, puede renovar el dominio al mismo precio al que lo registro y en la misma compañía. Durante este periodo el dominio no resolverá a ningún sitio. No se podrá transferir a otro registrador ni modificar. De este modo se evita que cualquier persona o empresa que disponía de un dominio pueda perderlo debido a un despiste u olvido. Este periodo de gracia varía en función de la autoridad competente.

Ahora bien, una vez finalizado el periodo de gracia, el dominio, si no ha sido renovado entra en un estado conocido como Redemption Period (El redemption period solo existe para los dominios con extensiones .com, .net y .org).

Durante este periodo que suele durar alrededor de 30 dias toda su información del whois es borrada (nombre, direcciones, numeros de teléfono, etc.) y el dominio queda completamente inactivo. El dominio solo podrá ser renovado por su propietario y deberá pagar unas tasas aproximadas a los 120 euros aunque puede variar en función de los precios que establezca la empresa a través de la cual registramos el dominio (en concepto de gestión) llegando incluso a los 200 euros.

El proceso de reintroducción de los datos del dominio se realiza de forma manual y este proceso puede tardar algunos dias.

Una vez transcurridos 5 dias desde el final del redemption period, el dominio será borrado del registro y volverá a estar disponible para ser registrado por cualquiera.

Tipos de dominio en internet

Existen 2 tipos de dominio: los dominios genéricos y los dominios territoriales.

- Los Dominios Genéricos: (también son denominados dominios internacionales o globales), son los dominios básicos en Internet y los más utilizados a nivel mundial. Están organizados de forma conceptual según sus terminaciones y que a continuación os mostramos en orden de mayor a menor utilizción. Los nombres de dominio genéricos tienen terminaciones formadas por 3 letras.

.com:	inicialmente previsto para empresas comerciales. Es el dominio más difundido en Internet.

.org:	inicialmente previsto para organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, instituciones y fundaciones.

.net:	inicialmente previsto para empresas relacionadas con Internet

.info:	esta terminación de dominio por regla general es utilizada por sitios web cuyo principal cometido es la difusión o publicación de contenidos informativos.

.biz:	esta terminación proviene de la abreviación de business (negocios en inglés) y su utilización está enfocada a la temática de los negocios.

.edu:	los dominios con esta terminación son utilizados para fines educativos.

- Los Dominios Territoriales: (también llamados domnios geográficos), son los dominios mantenidos por cada país. Estos dominios territoriales son utilizados por las organizaciones y empresas que desean establecerse en Internet y proteger la identidad de su marca o su nombre comercial en un país concreto. Los dominios territoriales tienen sus terminaciones compuestas por 2 letras.

En españa, la autoridad competente para el registro de dominios territoriales con el código de país ".es" es ESNIC, departamento de la Entidad Pública Empresarial RED.ES.

El registro de los dominios territoriales de España puede realizarse, bien a través de ESNIC directamente (www.nic.es) o bien a través de cualquiera de los registradores registradores acreditados por ESNIC (Los Agentes Registradores son intermediarios en los procedimientos relacionados con el registro de nombres de dominio bajo “.es” autorizados pro ESNIC y que tienen facultad para asesorar a los usuarios y actuar ante ESNIC para tramitar la asignación de nombres de dominio territoriales de España).

Los dominios territoriales de España están regulados por una normativa bastante más estricta que los genéricos o internacionales.

Existen 2 tipos de dominios territoriales con el código de país .es:

Dominios territoriales de 2º nivel ".es". Pueden ser solicitados por:

	- Las personas físicas españolas o extranjeras que residan en España. - Las entidades con o sin personalidad jurídica constituidas conforme a la legislación española. - Las primeras sucursales de sociedades extranjeras inscritas en el Registro Mercantil. - Los Órganos Constitucionales, el Defensor del Pueblo, el Consejo de Estado y el Tribunal de Cuentas, las Administraciones Públicas españolas y las entidades de Derecho Público con personalidad jurídica propia, así como los Departamentos Ministeriales y Consejerías de las Comunidades Autónomas. - Las embajadas y consulados extranjeros acreditados en España y las organizaciones i nternacionales a las que España pertenezca.

Dominios territoriales de 3er nivel .com.es - .nom.es - .org.es - .gob.es - .edu.es.

.com.es:	Pueden ser registrados por personas físicas o jurídicas y entidades sin personalidad que mantengan vínculos con España.

.nom.es:	Podrán solicitarlo las personas físicas que mantengan vínculos con España.

.org.es:	Podrán solicitarlo las entidades, instituciones o colectivos con o sin personalidad jurídica y sin ánimo de lucro que mantengan vínculos con España.

.gob.es:	Podrán solicitarlo las Administraciones Públicas españolas y las entidades de Derecho Público de ella dependientes.

.edu.es	Podrán solicitarlo las entidades, las instituciones o colectivos con o sin personalidad jurídica que gocen de reconocimiento oficial y realicen actividades relacionadas con la enseñanza o la investigación en España

La importancia de los dominios

El registro de dominios es un factor realmente importante para adquirir una presencia verdadera y consolidada en Internet, importancia que en el caso de las empresas o negocios asciende a niveles altísimos, convirtiéndose actualmente en parte imprescindible de su identidad corporativa e incluso en la parte fundamental de la misma (hoy en dia existen empresas que durante su proceso de planificación y creación pueden llegar a decidir el nombre de la misma en función de si su nombre de dominio se encuentra disponible o no).

En principio, una empresa estará interesada en utilizar un nombre de dominio que coincida con su nombre comercial o marca. Esta particularidad hace que los nombres de dominio sean susceptibles de tener valor económico; son un verdadero polo de atracción comercial para transacciones electrónicas (sobre todo en determinados sectores) y para consultas y comparaciones sobre productos y servicios por parte de los usuarios de la red. De tal modo, los nombres de dominios, constituyen, junto con las marcas y patentes un activo cada vez más valioso.

En realidad, podemos decir que registrar un nombre de dominio no es sino una nueva forma de uso de las marcas, que revitaliza las discusiones sobre distintividad y uso versus marca registrada, en un ámbito nuevo y en continua expansión , que plantea ya hoy en día problemas de difícil solución en un marco regulatorio todavia con grandes vacios legales.

Que es un dominio?

Técnicamente, un dominio es una dirección nemotécnica o alias de internet. Esta dirección , es la "traducción" a caracteres alfanuméricos de una IP (Internet Protocol), que en realidad es lo que entienden los routers de internet. Una IP está compuesta por 4 series de números y permite que nuestro dominio sea identificado para poder llegar a alcanzar determinada información.

En términos sencillos, un dominio es una dirección en Internet, que permitirá que fácilmente cualquier usuario de la red localice nuestra página web o nos escriba un correo electrónico sin necesidad de tener que recordar una serie de 4 numeros (IP).

Por ejemplo, es mucho más sencillo recordar esta web como blogger.com (dominio), que a través de 66.102.15.100(IP).

Uno de los aspectos mas relevantes de los dominios es que son únicos. Es decir, es completamente imposible que dos personas, empesas u organizaciones tengan simultáneamente el mismo nombre de dominio en Internet, de forma que el dominio se convierte en una auténtica seña de identidad en la red.
